OVERVIEW SECTION

Key Concepts

Challenge

The challenge was to streamline the clunky and unpredictable process of copying and cloning soft effects.

I aimed to correct flawed behaviors and introduce new, logically complex features without disrupting the user's familiarity with the software.

Impact

The enhanced copy/paste/cloning features now allow users to complete tasks more quickly and with fewer clicks.

This reduces user frustration with repetitive tasks, enabling them to focus more on the creative process instead of technical hurdles.

Useful terminology:

Tracks

Section of the timeline that contains video clips.

Track Items

The way video clips are called in Nuke Studio.

Soft Effects

Visual effects (eg. color correction) applied to a Track Item that modify it.

Clones

Linked Soft Effects enable synchronized updates across multiple elements.

Playhead

It indicates the frame currently displayed in the viewer.

discovery SECTION

Problems

Awkward

The existing method for isolating soft effect selections is tedious, requiring users to individually select each effect while holding down the CTRL (CMD) key.

Any error can lead to restarting the whole selection process, a frustrating experience when managing multiple elements on the timeline.

Inaccurate

The current system inefficiently stacks copied soft effects on destination track items, ignoring the original configuration.

For precise replication, users must copy effects one-by-one, leading to significant time waste especially when the operation is frequently repeated.

Rigid

The current system limits flexibility when copying and cloning soft effects. Copied effects are always added on top of existing ones, while cloned effects automatically replace them.

Users lack the option to copy effects and replace existing ones, or to clone while retaining existing effects.

analysis SECTION

Opportunity

How might we make the copy/clone functionalities

convenient, precise and flexible?

I converted our key problems into opportunities to solve during the redesign.

Awkward

Convenient

Selection of soft effects should be quick, intuitive, and error-tolerant, minimizing steps and user frustration.

Inaccurate

Precise

Users should effortlessly copy or clone soft effects between tracks, preserving the original setup without manual tweaking.

Rigid

Flexible

Users should have the option to either replace or keep existing soft effects during both cloning and pasting actions.

Possible impact

By enhancing the copy/clone feature, we'd offer users a more reliable and robust tool specifically designed to meet their needs, making their workflow more efficient.

brainstorming SECTION

Process

The bulk of the design was on the workflows around the pasting and cloning of soft effects. My efforts went into understanding the user needs and from there, working on the logic that these operations should follow.

Accounting for various scenarios was challenging. Cloning and pasting share logic but differ in how they place soft effects—based on playhead position for cloning and selection for pasting.

This required separate exploration for each case.

Focused on streamlining pasting and cloning workflows, my design efforts were aimed at understanding user needs and developing the logic for these operations accordingly.

Navigated a complex hierarchy of sub-cases to establish specific behaviors for track items and soft effects. Provided comprehensive documentation to developers for coding the nuanced logic.

final SECTION

Conclusion

In a specialized tool like Nuke Studio, even small tweaks to basic functions like copy/paste or cloning can be transformative.

This project taught me that impactful design doesn't have to be flashy; sometimes the most meaningful changes are the subtle ones that improve user workflows. It also gave me valuable direct contact with subject matter experts.

Takeaways

Simple is hard

Complex features must feel simple to the user. A QA's comment summed it up: "How could it have been different before?"

1

Words matter

Initially, "special paste" confused users. We switched to the clearer "sequential paste" for better user adoption.

2

Communication

I often led Backlog Refinement to clarify the design. Clear presentations were key to team buy-in.
